Starting a career in physiotherapy can be both exciting and challenging. At Royal City Physiotherapy (RCP), we understand the importance of continuous learning and support, especially during those crucial first months of practice. That's why we've designed a comprehensive mentorship program tailored specifically for new graduates, aimed at guiding you through the transition from student to skilled clinician.
New Grad Mentorship: The First 6 Months
The first six months after graduation can be challenging. During this time, you'll be navigating the complexities of real-world practice, from patient care to administrative tasks. Our Mentorship Program offers one-on-one mentorship sessions every week, each lasting one hour. These sessions are designed to provide you with hands-on guidance on a range of essential topics, including:
Case Management: discuss patient cases and organize effective treatment plans to make you feel confident.
Caseload Retention: discuss skills and tips on how to maintain your patient caseload.
Treatment Skills: review hands-on skills, patient positioning and education, and appropriate exercise prescription.
Doctor's Notes: understand how to craft comprehensive and professional notes for physicians.
ICBC Forms: work on completing insurance forms with accuracy and efficiency.
One-on-one mentorship sessions are led by our senior physiotherapist Jayme Gordon.
Continuing Mentorship: After the First 6 Months
After your first six months, the learning doesn't stop. You can continue to receive mentorship, with sessions becoming bi-weekly as you grow more confident in your skills. These ongoing sessions focus on refining your retention strategies, improving clinical skills, and analyzing clinician stats such as booking rates and cancellation rates. The goal is to boost your efficiency and ensure you’re delivering the best possible care to your patients.
Access to Clinic Director Office Hours
In addition to hands-on mentorship, you'll have access to Clinic Director office hours. This is an extra opportunity each week to connect with our senior therapist, Jayme Gordon, either virtually or in person. Whether you have challenges or questions related to specific patients, Jayme is available to provide additional support and guidance. These office hours are designed to complement your mentorship, giving you even more resources to succeed in your practice.
Joint Sessions for Complex Cases
Sometimes, you’ll encounter cases that require a second opinion. That’s where our joint sessions come in. When you’re faced with a particularly complex case, you can book a session with our senior clinician, Jayme Gordon, to gain insights and recommendations. This collaborative approach ensures that you’re always supported, no matter the challenge.
Group Mentorship: Learning Together
In addition to one-on-one mentorship, we offer group mentorship sessions on a biweekly or monthly basis. These sessions are an excellent opportunity to break down case studies, practice treatment techniques, and receive real-time feedback from your peers. Group mentorship fosters a collaborative learning environment where everyone benefits from shared knowledge and experiences.
In-House In-services: Quarterly Professional Development
Every quarter, we host in-house in-services focusing on specialized areas of physiotherapy. These sessions cover a wide range of topics. In the past we have had in-services covering:
Spring Loaded Bracing: we reviewed bracing techniques for offloading tricompartmental OA.
A variety of Clinician Guided In-services from course participation: Previous topics covered include common foot injuries, ACL rehabilitation, and cervical spine treatments.
Future In-services will include:
Strength and Conditioning: The strength and conditioning coach of the Vancouver Warriors, a professional box lacrosse team, will cover useful cues, program design, and lifting techniques.
Kintec and Bracing: we will review popular bracing products, as well as bracing fitting and prescription.
Common Orthopedic Surgeries
Randy Celebrini: will cover Return to Play protocols post ACL surgery
Our in-services are led by specialized physiotherapists and community professionals who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience in niche areas of practice.
