Healthy Buying (August): Interview with 'Good to Go's' Leni

August 5, 2016

Tell us a bit about the Good to Go story.

My family had restaurants growing up so I grew up in the restaurant industry. I went to school to become a holistic nutritionist at the Canadian school of Natural Nutrition and I graduated in 2010. I wanted to open a health food establishment immediately but my life turned in another direction. I ended up having a food truck in Downtown Vancouver for four years. It was Perogies. (laughs) It was completely not holistic. I got a little burnt out after four years and wanted to get back to doing my healthy thing. I stumbled across a place that available for lease and kind of jumped on it.

What kind of food do you offer?

Smoothies, salads and wraps.

Why do you think New Westminster needs a place like Good to Go? What sets it apart?

There’s not really any healthy options that are good and quick. It’s unique to New West in that way. My smoothies have absolutely no fillers, there’s no water, no ice. It’s basically just frozen food that I blend - if I’m using a liquid it’s going to be either almond milk or coconut water. It really is just whole food, it’s like a meal in a cup.

What kind of ingredients do you use? Where do you source them from?

We do organic and local as much as possible while keeping a price point realistic. Not everything is organic and I certainly don’t advertise that I am but I try as much as I can. All my salad dressings are made by me in-house. There’s no preservatives. I also make all the hummus for my wraps. Absolutely everything is made in-house. Pretty much every salad is vegan. There’s options for meat-eaters, for vegans, and options for gluten-free so I kind of try to cover all the bases.

What is your favourite item on the menu?

I would say the ‘Refresh’ smoothie and the ‘Glory Bowl’ is probably my favourite salad. But to be honest, I’m kind of all over the place. I’ve got a new favourite every day.

What does the word ‘healthy’ mean to you?

That’s a good question. I think healthy means ‘good for you’. That sounds cliche but - you’re better for it, after introducing it. It’s just goodness. It’s peace of mind, knowing you’ve done something good for yourself in a day.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I was born and raised in New West so it’s really nice for me to be a part of the community again. My truck was in Vancouver so I really just like that I’m back to my roots and bringing New West something that no one has offered yet. I really like seeing faces that I know on a daily basis. Everyone in Sapperton has been super supportive. It’s just nice to be home, so to speak.
